Skull - C1/2 fusion risks?

Hi, my wife had a fall, fractured C1/2 and T6 3 months back. Hospital only diagnosed the C1 and let her go with a Halo type brace (removable) with instructions to wear it 24/7 for 90 days and come back.

Having since discovered multiple C1 factures plus a C2 and T6 break since and little signs of bone consolidation, we took a second opinion. Without question, the NS says surgery is (and always was) unavoidable, but the 3 month delay has limited the options.

So he's recommending a skull fusion to the C1 or what's left of it :) maybe C2 with a 70% loss in rotation. My wife has cancer these past 2 years and is doing fine but wants to live her life today without further delays as you never know...

I fully support her choices but just wanted to get any insight into possible risks/complications from this type of surgery (round my way they are pretty light in telling you the full story)...thanks
