I have had a general feeling of dull pain (heavy head), severely tight traps, sore upper back muscles for about 3 years now. I had a laydown MRI which showed nothing 2 years ago. I had a sit down MRI about a week ago and got the report back right away. It showed I had a C4-C5 protrusion that could be causing C5 radiculopathy. I don't have any numbness , weakness or pain in the arm, just a dull pain ( 4 on a 1-10 scale ) constant which gets worst when I stand, walk or sit for a period of time.
After receiving the report I called my Primary and asked for a Medrol Dose pack to see if there was some severe inflammation that could be contributing to this. Low and behold , I found relief finally. However, now that the pack is done the pain is creeping back. I went back to Dr who is now going to be me on a tapered dose of 40mg prednisone over 12 days to see if that can break the cycle. I bought an air neck traction device hoping it may help as well.
What I am asking is, sometimes it pays to ask others for help. The people you ask who are not doctors sometimes give better advice than those who are. I am asking to see what you all suggest for me. I am 33 and about to start PA school and have a child. My chronic pain makes me cranky, irritable, depressed and honestly not the person I used to be. I am tired of it. I had a quick glimpse of my old pain free self during the Medrol pack but I know I cannot take steroids for life. I don't want to take NSAIDS either ( though I was also just prescribed meloxicam ) due to the fact that they can cause a whole new set of serious problems long term. What do you suggest? Is there any hope? I do have an appointment to get another opinion from a neurosurgeon just to be sure. The MRI doesn't look that bad and the bulge is not touching the spinal cord just the CSF sac surrounding it.
