Hi there. I'm Fiona. I'm a 31-year-old mother of five, living in New Zealand.

I suffered a back injury at the age of 14, which more than likely led to the development of my current condition. I have moderate thoracic levoscoliosis, lumbar dextroscoliosis with a rotational component, moderate degeneration of the L5-S1 vertebrae.

I experience chronic pain, which is eased mildly (so I can get through the day) by far too many pain meds and an antidepressant for nerve pain (alongside depression and anxiety - diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and ADHD). I'm probably insane too, as I do a lot of running around after my five little monsters (aged 11, 11, 9, 6, and 2), my partner, and his daughter (12-going-on-20).

I get a lot of referred pain in my right and left arm, mainly in the thoracic region of my spine, numbness, hot and cold sensations from my ribcage right down to my right ankle.

My doctor doesn't want to refer me for any additional scans.

  • your spine? Who is managing your pain treatment? What treatment options have been recommended, other than pain medications?
  • Hi Sandi,

Currently just my regular doc is only prescribing pain meds. I've done extensive acupuncture, osteopathy, and even have been to a chiroprator, to attempt pain management. I'm considering changing doctors to see if I can be referred to someone who specializes in spine health.
  • Hi Fiona. I've only got 2 children (4&8) & live with chronic pain. My heart goes out to you.

I don't know what the medical system is like in New Zealand. Are there a lot of pain management specialists or is it common for your GP to prescribe pain meds for chronic pain patients? Is it pretty easy to get a consult with a spine surgeon or specialist or are there long waiting lists? I'm from England but live in the USA at the moment & I know it can be very different getting appropriate care in different countries.

Please don't go to a chiropractor again. Their 'adjustments' can cause serious damage when you have spine damage.
