Interpreting MRI results

Hi there,

This is my first time posting on any forum and I really hope someone with some medical knowledge can help me with medical jargon/advise. NB- I am a Registered Nurse but ortho is not my area of practice.

So this is my story (edited low lights!). In early 2013 I injured my back after a fall. It was a nightmare, the pain was excrutiating and this went on for 6 weeks. I had a MRI and CT scan, both indicating disc bulges at L4/L5 and also at L5/S1 which is contacting the left l5 nerve root.

Also worth mentioning I am a former gymnast and have a L4/5 spondylolisthesis. My sports physician specialist suggested epidural steroid injection, which had absolutely no effect. At this point he suggested I would most likely need surgery and referred me to ortho surgeon.

When I had the consult with surgeon he recommended intense Physio and core strength exercises for 6 weeks and if no improvement he would review me again. I am happy to say that I made a complete recovery and the surgeon was amazed as he was certain I would need a spinal fusion with bone graft etc.

I have a question:
- surgeon asked if he could fix the back pain or the leg pain which would I prefer as he would not be able to fix both. Why is that? And although my leg was weak and had sciatica at times it was my back which was the most painful.

-that brings me to present day. I had a very minor slip and fall which at the time did not hurt my back at all. But as time went on the pain progressed. Today is day 4, early days I know, but pain is worse not better.

-do disc bulges repair themselves? If so how long would this take?
-also interesting fact the sciatica I have now is in my right leg not left as before, any ideas what that would suggest.

Sorry for long post would really appreciate any advice :-)
