Hi, thanks in advance for taking the time to read this. I'm a 41 year old female, average weight and fine health.
I suddenly developed what I thought was a typical neck spasm 25 days ago. Fifteen years ago, I had whiplash after being rear-ended. Since then (and after successful treatment of the acute injury), I would periodically experience a neck spasm on my left side that included intense pain but would always be alleviated by 2-3 days of Flexiril and Vicodin/Percocet.
This new "spasm" started on my right side 25 days ago. I had not injured myself nor experienced any type of trauma. After a few days of pain, I went to my doctor and got the flexiril. I could not believe that the drug had zero effect on my pain. Since then, I have been in constant level 8-9 pain, including pounding headaches, jaw pain, burning shoulder pain, throbbing in my bicep and tricep, severe wrist pain, and numb and throbbing fingers. Nothing helps. I have tried PT, Lidocaine trigger point shots, chiro (NEVER AGAIN), heat, ice, several muscle relaxants, Vicodin, Percocet. Zero relief.
I saw a neurologist today and brought an 18-month old MRI. I have a significant bulge in c6-7 and my right side EMG was significantly abnormal. I'm trying methylprednisolone for a week. My neurologist said that if I feel relief in 24-48 after the steroid, I'll be in good shape and can start actual neck-strengthening PT yoga. If there is no relief, he said we might have to look at surgery. He was especially concerned that there was no precipitating event.
I would be very appreciative of any advice, similar experience and what you did, etc. I am at the end of my rope with this constant pain.
Thanks again, Suze.
