medicare co pays for pain medication

Hi, has any one noticed that your medicare drug plan has increased the co pay for your pain medication for next year. I am on MS Contin (one of the cheapest), and the monthly co pay from most companies was up to over 400 dollars a month for 2015. The lady from medicare finally found me one company that is twice the price I am paying now. But, at least the Morphine will be only 45 dollars. This was the only one she could find.

Unfortunately, I can't afford Lidoderm patches, generic or name brand. They will throw me right into the doughnut hole. I really get relief from them. Does anyone have any suggestions as to an over the counter alternative? I used them both on my lower back and on my scapula and left arm.

Is this being done to discourage opiate use??? It sure is not fair to people in chronic pain who are compliant, if it is!!! We usually cannot work and have financial problems also.

Take care and God Bless,
Mary Anne

  • What about biofreeze? Would that be an option? I know that some people have had great relief from using it.
  • I am going to try it. Thanks Sandi. I have one box of patches left and then I will try the bio freeze. Take care.

Good luck with it . I hope that it helps. Another option that I have heard of, is using an over the counter capsacin cream available in pharmacies, but I'm not sure of the name of it.

Mary Anne, have you checked to see if you qualify for Extra Help (with prescription costs) in your state? You can find information about this program in your Medicare & You handbook. There might be a phone number on the back of the booklet. I have Extra Help, and my copys for all meds, regardless of the so-called tier they're in, are just a few bucks.
  • DMSO helps me. There is a small thread on it here, or you can google it for lots of info, or just look at the comments on amazon.
