Hello I have been comming to this site for advice and info for some time and I am at my wits end. I am a 25 year old female who began having back pain at 17 years old after a knee sugery where I favored one leg for too long and began having sciatica. I did PT with good results although it had never fully gone away. In the last 7 years I have done PT about 1 to 2 times a year with a decently good result and tried to keep up at home with the exercises as much as I could. I had an MRI done in 2011 which showed moderate degenerative changes, loss of disk height and spinal stenosis. I usually have one big" flare up "a year in which i am in chronic pain and need anti inflammatory and PT. I also did housekeeping from 2012 until a few months ago which was pretty rough on my back although ive always been in the gym doing core exercises and keeping fit which has helped my back pain and mobility significantly. I had my first child 11 months ago and he is a very heavy 26 lb baby now who is not yet walking which is doing me no favors. Fast forward to 4 month ago i stopped housekeeping because the pain got so bad. I was bed ridden for almost 2 weeks. As soon as it started to get better i switched to a part time sit down job and i was in a lot of pain (never felt fully healed from the last episode probably) After only a week of being functional I was bed ridden for another week and a half with pain. Lost my job because I kept cancelling. It happened once again and i was in hell just trying ibuprofen, tylenol, muscle relaxers and heating pad. Once I got over that episode about a week ago i wanted to prevent it from happening again so I tried to do a few very light core stabilizing exercises which i learned in therapy. Only a few hours later I senced my back going down hill and by the end of the day I was in a full fledged bout of debilitating pain AGAIN. This is my 4th day in pain and it seems to be happening every other week now and it is too sensitive for the pt exercises to help it. I went to my doctor about a week ago and she said "this is something that you will have for life, you have to just manage the pain and prescribed me mobic (anti inflammitory) and flexerall muscle relaxer and told me that since i have always responded to pt so well that i should go back and she also gave me a referral to pain clinic. I told her that the exercises make my back worse now and it is a different kind of pain in new areas. She diddn't seem to respond to what I said to her. My first pt is supposed to be this Friday and by then I may just be recovering from this bout and can't afford for it to be going out on my again especially so soon. I have tried pain shots in the past with not much results but i am waiting three weeks for pain clinic and orthopedic appointment. Does anyone have anything similar? Should I request to get a new image MRI done? and should i cancel pt or go and tell the therapist at the evaluation what exercises ive been doing and that they have been making it worse? I have lost 2 jobs in 3 months because of this and can't even take care of my son. I just had an interview for a really good job last week and have another interview nest week.If i dont have a job by mid January I will be homeless and I am too disabled by this to work at the moment.
Another thing that may be helpful to note is that the pain used to be sciatica and was fairly predictable and with a day of rest and then exercises and meds i would be practically pain free in days the pain now in lower to mid back in a very stiff knot/ball type of feeling that constricts my movements. Also some sciatica pain on both sides but heavily affecting my butt, legs and shooting pain through the groin and also shoulder mid back pain. Not the same as it used to be that is what makes me feel this is something different.
Any encouragement or advice would be helpful!!
