Sciatic pain L-5/S-1 caused by herniated disc recovery

2 years ago I was diagnosed with Degenerative Disc Disease. At this time I experienced some mild pain in my lower back and butt area, but nothing too serious. Then about 7 months ago I started to have pain in my L-5/S-1 nerve (aka sciatic nerve). The pain starting the lower lumber and extended into my butt area. It progressively got worse the next few months. The pain started to project into my thigh, calf and eventually led to numbness in my foot. I experience pain no matter if I was standing, walking, sitting and sleeping. It also changed my life other aspects of my life negatively: mentally, emotionally and socially. I went from exercising 4-5 times per week to nothing. I tried ice, heat, ibuprofen, Advil, massages, chiropractor, core exercises, rest, etc. and nothing really helped the situation. Finally, I had a major flare up trying to do yard work in which the pain was so extreme I couldn't stand-up. At that point I went to urgent care so I was given Tramadol and muscle relaxers which allowed me to fall asleep. I was able to get an appointments with the same orthopedic that diagnosed me with DDD, had an x-ray, but he really didn't offer anything helpful (long story). I made an appointment with a XXXXX Specialists. Based on my limitations and symptoms they strongly felt I had a herniated disc that was pinching my nerve. I had the epidural shot, which I was told may buy me some time for the disc to heal. It helped reduce some of the pain so I could stand and walk, but it didn't take away the chronic pain I was experiencing. I wanted to give 4 weeks to see what progress I would make because I knew there is a high chance for the disc to heal on its own. My life was still not normal and it was affecting my life negatively. I finally was open to surgery, but first needed an MRI to confirm everything. I ended up getting a microdiscectomy over a week ago, it immediately took my sciatic pain away. I wish I would have opted for this sooner.

  • My pains have been since about 2009 and got bad through the leg last spring..
What I really like to know is how you're doing post op?
I had one injection that didn't seem to do much, I was supposed to get another but was having trouble with my medical. I've been doing PT for about 2 mo now. It's helped with mobility but now with pain. My husband and I want to get pregnant this year and I'm wondering if these injections are simply delaying an inevitable surgery.
