transthoracic decompression T7-T8

I've been reading the forums for quite a while now and thought i'd say hello.
I had an accident last Aug 2013 where my leg went down a sink hole on a beach and landed really heavily onto my bottom. I broke my L3 and a disc in T7-T8 got pushed into my spinal cord which left me with bowel and bladder problems.
I was braced for 3 months for the L3 fracture. My neurosurgeon is soon (next week) to perform a transthoracic decompression at T7-T8. I understand this is major surgery and I'm quite worried about the after pain of the Thoracotomy.
If anyone has any tips or advice please feel free to message me. I will also post in the spinal operations thread.
Seasons greetings to all :)
