Possible arachnoid cyst and remission of pain

My 13 year old son has been in pain every day since mid-August, sometimes experiencing debilitating and writhing pain in his lower back and down the back of his right leg. After lots of MRIs and a CT myelogram, his doctors told me he had arachnoiditis and nothing could help except pain management. The diagnosis did not make sense to me so we travelled to a few different hospitals seeking help. The new diagnosis is that he most likely has an arachnoid cyst in the lumbar spine, but it is hard to see. Nevertheless, his nerve roots are compressed in a line and he appears to have no free floating nerve roots in the thecal sac (possibly due to the dorsal cyst). He is scheduled for surgery next week. He always walks with a limp, has some mobility issues, can't bend to touch his knees and can't run or jump. He also feels like he is losing strength in his right leg. Now, somehow, he has been pain free for the last four days, the limp is slighter, but he still can't bend. Have any of you who have had arachnoid spinal cysts experienced a remission in pain only to have it return again. Since school got out for break, he has been pretty immobile which probably helped. Last symptoms were 12/26 and he has had one active day since then - now questioning if surgery should wait? Thanks!
