SI Joint - Caused by Pregnancy? - Recommend Products?

Finally went to see a Pain mgmt doctor after 12 years of low back pain after a L1 compression fracture. I learned to deal with the pain except the last 2 years or so its been getting worse and worse. Ever since I had my son 2.5 Year ago. (I am 30 yrs now)

My MRI showed nothing different then the last one a year and half ago. This doc diagnosed SI Joint problems. From what I am reading this could have been caused by Pregnancy.. the hip pain didnt really start immediately, but from holding my son on my (opposite) hip and still lifting him (36lbs!) I am in so much pain.

It hurts to sit at my desk job all day. I cant sit on our couch, I toss and turn all night to get comfortable in bed.

I had a SI joint injection about a month ago.. it took about a week to work then lasted a week. He said most people need 2.. I am going back today for the 2nd.

Is this going to be a forever pain with injections every month and daily anti-inflammatory? So much pain and nothing comes up on the MRI, so strange. I guess the SI joint area doesn't show on the MRI?

What are my options... anyone find a good desk chair.. sleeping pillows..massage.. PT.. specialists.. etc. that may alleviate the pain? I am willing to pay anything at this point.

  • Hi There,

My SIJD got worse with pregnancy. I first injured it at work in 2004. I did PT and all was fine, I did all activities, running, rock climbing, etc and it was fine, no issues at all. Got pregnant in 2008 and had severe pain. Once I delivered I had an MRI, learned I had herniated a disc. We thought that was the issue. Went to PT and nope it was all SIJD issues. Had injections and it seemed to help. They first tried facet injections for my disc. Didn't help. Just the injections into my si joint helped. They lasted for months at a time. Then in 2010 I got pregnant again and did PT the whole time knowing I had SIJD. Once I delivered it only got worse. They did more injections, PT, an si joint belt and eventual RFA. All worked okay for certain amounts, but after awhile they stopped working. Now I'm getting my si joint fused.

Things to help is PT, an si belt, injections, RFA, exercises to help strengthen your pelvis and back, ice and heat. For sure get a team to help you and tests to both diagnose you and to rule out other issues.

  • So my hip pain is minimal now after the 2nd shot. Only random pains here and there in that area. But I still have the pain in my lower back. Take your hand from the top of left hip bone to the spine and its all in there.

Ive been consciously not lifting my son as much. (He is 2.5 he doesnt need to be carried) I am hving my matress checked under warranty to see if its sagging.. I need to research desk chairs because i sit 8 hours a day plus 2 hours in the car.

I will start physical therapy again (when I can get there with all this snow in NY)

Doc mentioned an epidural because of an area he showed me on the MRI (in the pain area) One side the nerve area was way smaller then the other side.. He didnt seem alarmed by the picture but maybe the Epidural would rule it out like the SI Injections.. ?
