Back surgery in 6 days for L2-3 large herniated disc - help

I have MRI showing "huge" herniated disk at L2-3. Numbness in left thigh and left hip and sometimes around spine. Numbness is now 5 days running. Doc (neurosurgeon) says will not get better, impinging on nerve, must take out the herniated disc material. Anything anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.

1. Always heard "avoid back surgery at all costs"
2. Worried about cauda equina syndrome if I pursue alternate treatment
3. How long is recovery and is there ever a full recovery?
4. Anything?
