Just searching for anyone with a similar set of symptoms/experience
I am a 27 year old female and almost 2 years ago, I woke up one morning, rolled over to turn off my alarm clock, and was hit with excruciating pain in my neck and a stabbing pain down my left arm. My neck was so tight it was stuck in the sideways position. This was no ordinary "crick in the neck" from sleeping wrong and after two days, I called my primary care doctor knowing that something was not right. He ordered x-rays and everything came back fine. It takes about 5 months for the spasms to decrease in severity and to be able to feel like I could support the weight of my own head. Long story short, this has happened to me 5 times since the original episode two years ago. It is always the same, turning over in the bed, or turning my head too far, seems to "trigger it". After about the 3rd time, my doctor sent me to a rheumatologist, suspecting it was fibromyalgia, which he then diagnosed as such, and I now see him regularly for treatment. However, I am not fully convinced that I have fibro.
After the first episode I saw a chiropractor who said it was likely a disc problem. Seeing him didn't help really and I could not afford it. I've also had all the bloodwork done for lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and everything has come back fine with the exception of my vitamin D levels, which are now recovering with supplements.
I've tried gabapentin at the highest dose, which did nothing. I've tried multiple muscle relaxers, and I'm currently on Flexeril. My latest, and current medication is Elavil, which until my last "episode" last week, was really helping.
I was just curious, since there are so many people here who know they have cervical disc problems, if this sounds like anything you have experienced. From all the reading I've done and talking to others with fibro, they all speak about more widespread pain and joint pain, which I have none of. It's mostly isolated to my neck muscles, shoulder muscles, and occasionally parts of my back muscles.
I will also add, just to put it out there, that my father is disabled due to disc degeneration in his spine and has had multiple surgeries/fusions, his sister has the same but in her neck, and her daughter also.
It would really put my mind at ease if I could get an MRI, but I know that my rheumy would brush that suggestion right under the rug.
I will add that before this all started, like most people my age, I was extremely active and very healthy. This has reduced me to being a couch potato and I can no longer do activities that I used to love. I am fortunate to have a boyfriend who is very understanding about my pain, but I hate that I'm in it constantly and really have no explanation for it.
Thanks in advance for sharing your similar experiences with me, or suggestions,if you have any. I have really enjoyed reading some of information on these boards. Many thanks, again.
