I've been suffering with lower back pain since October 2013 ,I have tried Physio, Accupuncture ,Steroid Injections and now I have been offered L5/S1 Fusion surgery. I'm absolutley terrified, can anyone tell me if its going to be worth my while going through all the pain and disruption?

  • Hi Moysarooney,
I had an L5/S1 anterior fusion in late 2013 and unfortunately have been in pain ever since. I am now diagnosed with SI joint dysfunction. I went to pt after surgery and 4 months later my neurosurgeon said he wasn't sure that my pain wasn't my SI joints all along. I have had 5 more injections, done pool therapy, regular therapy and have seen 2 more doctors, and still no relief. I had the fusion due to a collapsed L5 disc and DDD. The newest MRI shows the fusion is functioning properly so if I had SI joint dysfunction all along, I may not have truly needed the fusion. My sister had the same fusion 15 yrs ago and had wonderful results, which makes me think mine may not have been all in the disc. I had 3 surgeons tell me I needed the fusion though, so I went with the most qualified one. I would definitely get at least 2 opinions before proceeding, but there is definitely no guarantee it will resolve the pain. I am in more pain now than before the fusion, but I can't say that I regret doing it.
I hope you can find the right answer to your pain. Everyone is different for sure, as with my sister having relief with her surgery. Have you had anyone do an SI joint test on you first? Good luck and ask lots of questions about the necessity of the surgery.
