Hi I'm Jenni. I found this site a while ago while looking for people's experiences years after spinal surgery. I admittedly don't know much about the surgery I had done and what to expect I. The coming years. So these forums are a wealth of information for me.
I thought it had been 6 year but thinking about the dates it's actually be 8 years since I broke my back.
In 2006 my neighbors horse broke through our fence and my horses were about to get out. I escorted him back through the broken wire fence not seeing there was a line down behind my ankle. He took off running catching that wire and taking me with. He started twisting and panicking and wrapped me up in the fence and drug me. I honestly thought my head would be torn off. He finally fell but on top of me. I had been screaming for help and my husband came out and didnt see me till the horse got up. I had no idea I was even Injured at first. I was more interested in getting my boots he knocked me out of and catching my horses. I had no insurance so I didn't do anything but a quick trip to the er at which nothing was done.
My back started to hurt hours later and never got better. Two years later I went to the chiro as I couldn't take the pain anymore. Figured it to be cheapest. He X-rayed and sent me home with the X-rays to bring to a doctor. It showed I had a complete pars fracture at l 5 with quite a bit of space between the severed pedicle and the rest of the vert. For the next two years I tried everything. Neurotomy and more injections than I can count. I had one more fall from a horse that bucked at a gallop and i landed on my butt fracturing the little tip on l4. It took me so long to get over being afraid of my own horse after the first accident that I was still riding to heal my own mind.
Finally I had good insurance and went to neuro. Within two weeks (2010, September ) I was scheduled for surgery. I had what I thought was called an interbody fusion but my disk space wasn't replaced. I had two rods and four screws and grafts taken from my ic.
I didn't do well after surgery and possibly because I had lost my pain tollerance over the years. I had some atrophy. Dead leg, some nerve probs. But funny just as I decided no more hefty pain meds for me (6 months post op) I found out I was pregnant with baby #3. Gave me even more reason to stop. Pregnancy went well, delivery without epidural until the last 30 mins of labor as they were prepping me for a c section I wouldn't need. (thanks to the epidural the dr said he couldn't get in the space. Tried so many times and Said I have scoliosis. Never looked into it)
So here I am now, been really happy I had the surgery. Little pain in low back, just si joints...however I hurt my back just recently and decided to join so I could ask questions and participate, find some support etc.. I am not sure what happened but all of the sudden have sciatica and numb cold legs and lumbar pain.
Sorry my story is so long. It kinda feels good to tell it as I often say that injury ruined my life. But really it just changed it.
I am 39 married 17 years and mother of 3. And yes I still own a horse and still ride. Just slower lol
