L5-S1 Fusion & L4-5 Replacement

I was wandering if anyone has had this operation done. My partner has Chronic L5 Radiopathy and has been suggested to have the above surgery. I have been reading that once a fusion has been done it creates preasure on the above disc and also once a disc has been replaced it can not be fused if problems occur later in life. My question is if anyone has had a disc replacement on the L5-S1 instead of a fusion? 1 surgeon said that his L4-5 Disc was pristine and 1 surgeon has recommended replacing as the fusion puts additional preasure and the disc on L4-5 has slight oesteoathritis but nerves etc all look good. If anyone has any advice or experience please share as we want to get as much info as possible before making final decision and we are also getting 2 more opinions.
Thanks Heaps:)

I can only say from my experience it was probably the worse decision I ever made. I had it done about 12 years ago here in Phoenix . The fusion creates a change in you backs' mechanics which will affect the discs above and below the fusion (if there are any). I was in constant pain from the start; ended up having to quit work at 53 and now have a morphine pump implanted in my abdomen to control the continuing pain (which only makes it barely tolerable) Funny thing is I also had a fusion at C-6 and C-7, and that has never produced pain since the day it was done. I would only say before committing make sure you have adequately researched all options, have received several second opinions from doctors you trust and then decide.
