Should I continue taking the same amount post surgery?

I had a spinal fusion in 2011 of L5-S1 then I had another fusion 6 days ago. L3-S1 replaced all hardware and fused top levels. Now, I've had issues with taking more pain meds than I should in the past. For this reason I give my script to my wife every month so she can deal out what I need for the day or time. I was taking 2 - 30mg OxyContin extended release, 4 - 10/325 hydrocodone and some other muscle relaxers. Now after surgery I am prescribed 3 - 40 mg OxyContin extended release and 2 - 10/325 hydrocodone every 4 hours with robaxin at night. Now my significant other is trying to downgrade me less and less at each dose. I am 6 days out from surgery and I'm counting down the minutes to my next dose of meds and she says "I thought we said we were going to let your body tell you when you needed meds?" She insists that I don't need the amount I have been prescribed and rolls her eyes and gives me crap every time I ask for medicine. What do I do to get it through to her???? HELP!!!!

  • You're only 6 days out. At that point of my single level fusion I was taking medication as prescribed & dolled out by nursing staff at rehab. Each to their own but if you feel lousy & in pain then I wouldn't be reducing medication just yet.

  • I am the biggest critic when it comes to taking pain meds (check my posts), but due to the circumstances involved here, you need to follow the recommended dosage for now. When the time comes, gradually decrease the dosage.

Though I can appreciate your Wife's concerns (be thankful she cares), she needs to let her guard down for now and just follow Doctor's orders. It is way too soon to change anything right now. You're embarking on the 3 month acute pain phase and these pain meds are needed. We've been there and done that!

Sending healing vibes your way..... Keep us posted!

Realize that FEAR is our worst enemy. Get up & get out in that stormy weather of the real world & kick fear in the teeth. Stare at it dead in the eyes & walk right through it into the storm; because once you're wet, you won’t fear the rain anymore
  • Thank you so much for the speedy response
