I am a 44 year old guy from Tampa, FL. After years of weightlifting I had some sciatica pain back in November of 2014.

After seeing my Primary Provider and having an MRI I visited a Neurosurgeon who recommended a discectomy. I am scheduled for a microdiscectomy on 2/19/15. I do not have much pain but a 14mm L5/S1 herniation. I have weakness in left calf and hamstring. The weakness is very, very slowly improving. I have seen two Neurosurgeons who suggest surgery.

I am looking to gain more knowledge here on this site before my surgery. And hopefully making some new friends.

I have an appt with a neuro in 3 weeks for the same area. I am really hoping that surgery is not the first course of action. I'd like to try PT first. Did any of the docs you saw suggest it at all? I have to be honest, I have not read a lot of encouraging long term effects from surgery so far. Have you?
  • Sorry to hear that you have to have surgery. I just had a micro discectomy and laminotomy at the same level almost 3 weeks ago. I was told due to leg weakness that surgery was the best option.
I read some threads and articles on here about preparing for surgery that were very helpful. There was a thread on things to get before surgery that was helpful too. I bought 2 quality ice packs from Amazon for 10$ each. Also bought a grabber. All have been helpful.
    Good luck.
