l5/S1 Anterior lumbar fusion

Hi, I have just had a anterior lumbar fusion of the L5/S1 -19/2/15.

The hospital did not control my pain whilst in for four nights and I have been unable to control it still at home,
I am allergic to morfine, Fentanyl & endone.

On 2nd day of surgery I found my left leg was like it had a hot poker inserted fro m thigh to foot. Left foot also num and pins and needles. Physio had me up and sheer determination motivated me to do every thing I could to get out of hospital. Australia may be a lucky country but public nursing staff were disgusting people ( ratio of 8 out of 10 were horrible).

I was told on surgery the left nerve was stretched while op was being done but " good news it will clear, but no confirmation of when".

The biggest problem I have is the left leg nerve, it comes from the left glute to thigh area to my knee and from bottom of calf to toes. The shooting pain in toes are the worst, they just keep coming. My foot from under calf to toes are also very painful on the OUTSIDE, weird. I can only put on a very soft slipper but cannot touch it or where any other type of foot wear!

I started using ice but last night I was in so much pain my husband said lets try heat, he put my foot in a warm foot spa and heat mat for my back. I think it has helped as I can bear to touch top of my foot this morning. Will monitor to see if heat is the best option over ice.

Incision site started bleeding on Sunday so I went to medical centre where doc said don't worry and dresses it, he said come back in two days. I have noted today (Monday) that it has bleed again, is this normal?

I will call specialist with these queries today.

Overall it has been a horrible experience so far but the pain I was in before and constant drugs made it the best option - just hope it was the right one.

  • Fusion surgery is very painful, even with drugs. Mine was done front and back. I was pretty much in bed for 4 months. Heat was the only thing that helped me. So much so that I scorched the capillaries. So be careful! I am in the US, but my hospital treatment was the pits also.

You have a long road ahead of you, but take it one day at a time. You will make it.
