Lower back pain - what is it

I've had lower back pain for three weeks now, with no sign of it going. I've had similar before but it's cleared up within a week. This time though the pain has changed and I'm cramping across the top of my bum. Went to the docs after week 2 and he prescribed painkillers and said keep moving. I went to a physio at the end of week 3 (yesterday) and he showed me some exercises. But couldn't confirm if it was spinal or muscle. Basically I seize up overnight and can't bend forward. When I lie flat on by back and do ankle pumps it pulls/stretches something in my lower back. When it first started, standing and walking was the most comfortable. But now walking hurts and I can't take large strides, with either leg. So basically, I'm now limping too. Sitting down with my back straight is more comfortable than it was.

Any ideas what this is?
