Recovery time

How long does it take to get back to normal after having Anterior lower disc surgery?

What did your doctor tell you?

And then, what is normal? Can you go back 100% to what you did before? Probably not. There are always some restrictions and limitations.

There are so many variables involved with spinal surgery recovery

    • - How involved the surgery was
      - How long before you had the surgery
      - Were there any nerves involved
      - What kind of health were you in before
      - Did you smoke
      - Have you started Physical Therapy
      - etc
The list goes on. Thats why its so difficult to come up with any solid answer. As a guide, I have always looked at the 6 month time period as to when you should be getting back as close to normal as you can. But it can took up to a year before that happens, based on some of the variables I mentioned above.

It’s really different for everyone as no two diagnosis or conditions are alike. Variables might be
other health issues not directly related to spine challenges. Also, post operatively everyone recovers
at a different rate. And finally, long term prognosis may be affected by how one follows their Surgeons

For myself , I’m doing quite well 7 months post op 2 level fusion. I’m back to doing almost all
pre surgical physical activities i.e.Gym,Skiing and Golf. However, this is the NEW normal. Meaning that although most of the pain is gone, there are some activities I shouldn’t do, EVER! Continuous running is out as the Surgeon indicated the added stress could compromise other lumbar levels. And, I’ll probably always be cognizant of this surgery therefore adapting activities accordingly.
However , with all said I would do it again as life has improved with surgery!
    Hope this helps!
