Hi all. I'm new to this forum. I hope someone can give me some comfort in knowing that what I'm feeling is common and will improve. I have had L5/S1 disk herniation for over 10 years. I was stable and I was exercising regularly and all was good until pain came back about 6 years ago, when the back pain started to flare up. I could still exercise and move about, but I could not sit at my desk or stand still for any length of time. I would have to stretch every morning to loosen up. My back seemed to lock on me often. I am 48 y.o female, not overweight and extremely active. After rounds of therapy and injections, I saw a neurosurgeon. He told me it was clear that I needed a fusion and the disk was completely degenerated. On 3/10/15 I I underwent an L5/S1 fusion with rod and screw placement. I had been progressing well, feeling stronger each day. walking as suggested, no bending, twisting, etc. I had pain at the incision site and tightness. On post op day 13 or 14, I began waking up with terrible pain on the outside of my lower left leg. I thought I slept wrong and irritated a nerve. The pain went away after I took my pain medication and began my day, again just taking it easy around the house, walking as recommended and no bending twisting, or lifting. This happened for 2 days. Then it went to both legs, on the outside, starting in hip to ankle. The pain is worse in lower legs (outside). Hip and upper leg area is actually bearable, but the outer lower legs are not. Yesterday the pain came while awake and just came on. It is a throbbing pain. I did not have this pain prior to surgery. I would get the occasional leg pain/weakness, but not of this magnitude. this pain wakes me from my sleep and today will not go away so far. I called the doctor's office on Thursday and they did say that perhaps I had slept the wrong way and there is a nerve irritated and to try a muscle relaxer before bed. Not helpful. Has anyone else had this issue? Is it a normal reaction after surgery? Given that they cut through the muscle. Forgot to state that they went in through the back, not front. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. I am thinking of icing the back to reduce any swelling that there may be, but my discharge instructions don't mention icing and of course its Saturday so can't get clearance on that. My f/u appt is not until 4/6/15 and I will be getting an x-ray to check fusion at that time. Thank you.
