  • I am 18 days post of L5/S1 lumbar fusion. I asked the doctor about a brace b/c I read a lot about people wearing them after, but he said no.

Hi therebak . Yes I wore a back brace for a couple of weeks and off and on for many years after my surgery. I had a laminectomy/discectomy of L5-S1 in 1991. I continued to wear the brace for many years after. I felt much safer wearing the brace especially when I was lifting something somewhat heavy. I was a construction worker, so I was up and down ladders all the time. Good luck with your recovery.
  • Thank u for ur response. It is very helpful.
  • I am 3 1/2 weeks post op and wearing a brace. Will have it on until at least my next appointment in two weeks. I actually don't mind it, it give me some reassurance I won't bend, twist wrong. Best wishes in your recovery!
  • Thx mpottoroff , how long did they say u will have to wear the brace ?
  • I go back on the 14th and they will tell me then. Although its not very comfortable, I actually don't mind it so much, it gives me a sense of reassurance that I won't do anything I shouldn't. I've bee recovering well so don't want to jeopardize anything at this point. Wednesday will mark 4 weeks since surgery!
  • I had a soft elastic brace with boning, had to wear it the first six weeks when walking or sitting and after that the PT worked with me transitioning to not wearing it. For me, it alleviated some pain and I still break it out on really bad days when I have to work but am hurting before taking my first step. I had spinal fusion at s1-l5, bone spur removal, spinal fluid leak due to tear, decompression and micro discectomy at l4-5 for the surgery that had me wearing a brace.

Was told by neuro they want to wean you as soon as you are healthy enough so that your muscles can develop and brace you properly on their own, so even when I do need it now, i am careful not to overuse it.

What kind of brace are you using hard or soft?
  • It is a hard plastic ,with velco wraps. Around the waist.
