I will be having neck surgery for pinched nerves, stenosis and a collapsed disc all at C5-C7 very soon. I would like to have a bi-level disc replacement and my doctor agrees that would be the best option considering my age. I am 43 and very active at work, etc. I will also probably need a fusion at L4 but the topic of this question will be just about the neck area. Does anyone here have experience dealing with insurance companies when they will not approve a bilevel disc replacement and instead will only approve either a bilevel fusion or a hybrid single disc replacement and fusion at the other level?
I am concerned my insurance will reject my doctor's request for a bilevel disc replacement...he said they rarely approve it even though the replacements are FDA approved even for a bilevel situation. It is very important for the work I do to maintain as much flexibility as possible and not have to deal with other back problems down the road when fusions start to cause the discs above and below them to fail as well. I have heard some people have had success suing their health insurance company for the approval maybe that is one route but I would like to hear others hopefully. Thanks looking forward to hearing from everyone!
