C1 Burst Fracture - Pain Top of Head

In December of 2014 - I broke my C1 and C7 in a motorcycle accident in South East Asia.

C1 was a burst fracture (the left posterior lateral mass and the right lateral anterior ring). The ligaments were intact (MRI). I was air lifted to Singapore and was placed in a halo collar for 8 weeks. After 8 weeks CT was done and it showed some seperation of the left fragment. I was taken out of the halo and placed into an Aspen cervical collar. I have been in this now for the last 7 weeks. I had a CT done last week at it showed even more seperation.

After redoing MRI and flex/extension xrays it was determined stable and the advice was to ween off the brace over the next 6-8 weeks. This week I am switching from the Aspen to the soft collar for sleeping and then in one more week the soft collar for day use and nothing at night.

To me this seems crazy considering there is no bone growth. However, I have personally spoken to others who have gone through the same thing. In fact, one person didn't have bone union and its been 4 years! No surgery either. This person lives a healthy complete life (roller coasters, waterskiing, weight lifting).

At the moment I only have pain when exploring ranges of motion and end of day (fatigue). The weird pain I get is in the top of my skull. Feels like a tingling or dull pain.

Anyways, any experiences welcome...

  • I didn't have a herniated disc at C1 but I have bulging at c4 and c7. I had fusion done at C5/C6 for a herniation with spinal cord compression. The top and back of my head always hurt. I cant stand having anything touch it which sucks because I have to wear a bump cap and hairnet at work. I am not sure what causes this,
