Was just wondering if anyone has had a negative experience with an EMG needle study..I had one done today, it was sheer torture. I have neck problems and when the needle was inserted I screamed and cried in severe pain. The doc said it all looked normal, but my symptoms of numbness, tingling, weak and heavy right arm with swelling of fingers and hands constantly going to sleep. Don't see how it could be normal.any past experiences with this would be so helpful. I have a high tolerance to pain.this just doesn't make sense to me. Thanks

I also had more pain than I expected after my EMG. When they put those needles into the back of my neck, I also cried. I was also discouraged to hear that my test didn't really show much going on? The doctor said there's some kind of nerve damage in my elbow but that wouldn't give me issues in my neck? He couldn't explain why I'm taking 1800mg of gabapentin if there's no nerve issues? My last neck surgery was over a year ago, so I'm not real hopeful that this nerve pain will get any better. I have heard that other people have had this test & had negative results, but had other tests to find out in fact there is nerve damage?
  • I have read up on the study....I also take gabapentin 3 X daily . as well as muscle relaxers. The info I studied said not to take these meds a couple days prior to test. Makes sense to me. Thinking maybe by meds I wasn't given an accurate result. I will not repeat this test..ever!

I asked the question here if my gabapentin would affect the test results & everyone that answered said no? I am now going to a new ortho shoulder doctor on Monday. Now my surgeon says the pain in my shoulder & arm isn't coming from my neck? It sure is frustrating getting answers!
