I'm 17 now, a foreign exchange student. last Late July, I was diagnosis with MRI as lumbar disc protrusion and degenerated L4-L5. I did physical therapist and felt better. After a 16hour flight I feel bad and limited in walking mid August. I went to physical therapist for 6 weeks and felt better. Due to time management problem with my host family, I stop going. And it was basically fine. Some tensions in the muscle between knee and ankle on the outer side and back side, pain near ankle and some pain in back. 0-10 level, assuming 5 is need to take pain-killer and 10 is death is better, it was constantly 2 sometimes 5. Walking will not be as usual in the morning when I wake up. I lost 30pounds since the injury but built up some muscle during the time. I'm not using medication right now. I do some home exercise everyday and it is gradually getting better. After I swim the pain will increase . yesterday after jogging 2miles using 20mins. I felt normal at the beginning and worst at night.
I was juried by sports hurting, most likely intense soccer games, basketball pickup games and work out. I do a lot of long run before not marathon but 10K most likely. I ran in the mountains, like cross country and that hurts my back for sometime but it recovery in hours so I didn't care until it get really bad in July. I was a pretty good player in basketball and a better one in long run. The injury made me missed the spring season cross country , winter season basketball and spring season track n field.
The treatment are conservative, since the doctor back in my country and here both think I'm still young,, some traction like pulling the body by machine .
Should I get surgery? A micro one? Or should I just do physically therapist again? Will surgery bring me back to court and running field? Even not as good as before. How long should I expected to come back to classroom if a micro surgery is perform? I got the summer, from June 1st to mid August to fly back here. Will that be enough time for me to recover and handle the long flight? There will be a big tournament in Co late August, do you think I can catch up with that? ( it's 4 day and 7-10k everyday)
Thanks guys. Appreciate that.

  • if you should get the surgery. Seems like the process for most of us is getting the MRI, going to the NS, then you get a "menu" of options, or in some cases (like mine) NS says "you need this one thing the sooner the better." Good luck and please keep us posted.Others may be able to describe whether the options offered that were more conservative than surgery.
