Intense pain

Hi, I'm a 19 year old female and I'm experiencing extremely bad lower back pain.

The pain started a few days ago and has been getting worse and worse since then. There is no comfortable position for me to sit, I am constantly sore even when lying in bed, and walking is getting increasingly difficult.

I weigh around 10st12lbs and I'm about 5'7" so I don't really think my weight is an issue? I'm not sure.

I am not somebody who goes to the gym or really excercises but I do enjoy going swimming a couple of times a week, sometimes less. I am somewhat active, I walk everywhere and sometimes go running (not often this year, but last year I trained to run to 5k races).

I've tried some stretches over the last couple of days but it's not easing the pain and it's getting difficult to do. I've tried heat pads and that soothed it initially but it's not so effective as the days go on.

Does anybody have any advice on what could be causing this or how to ease the pain?
How long should I leave it before I see a doctor? I don't want to book an appointment for them to send me on my way saying there's nothing wrong.

I don't know if it's at all relevant but I also suffer with joint pain, mostly in my hips but my knees and ankles also become stiff and sore whilst swimming. I've visited the doctor about this and they insist there is nothing wrong with me and I'm too young to have arthritis.

My mother suffers from degenerative disc disease and I have an older brother who has scoliosis. Again, not sure this is relevant.

It would be very helpful if you could provide us with more details. So many times we read about members who have different tests and they all come back negative. The more clues and information you provide, the better chances in finding out what is wrong,

Here are some questions that you should answer:

  • - When did this first start?
    - Was it the result of an accident or trauma?
    - What doctors have you seen? (Orthopedic, Neurosurgeon, Spine Specialist, etc)
    - What Conservative treatments have you had? Which ones?
    - What diagnostic tests have you had? And their results (MRI, CTScan, XRay, EMG, etc)
    - What medications are you currently using? (details, dosage, frequency, etc)
    - Has surgery been discussed as an option? (If so, what kind)
    - Is there any nerve pain/damage associated?
    - What is your doctor’s action plan for treating you?

Providing answers to questions like this will give the member community here a better understanding
of your situation and make it easier to respond.

Diagnosing spinal problems can be very difficult. In many ways its like a game of clue. Especially, when the diagnostic tests come back negative – no trouble found! Then its up to the patient and the doctor to start digging deeper. The doctor is like a detective. They need clues to help them move along. So, you as the patient need to provide the doctor with all sorts of clues. That is like it is here. Without having information about a condition, its impossible for anyone here to try to help.
