Pain Med question for Back Pain

Hi everyone. I have had back pain for about 18 months now. Had an MRI done and found out the below.

4 evaluations = Surgeon Recommendations:
1. Spine Laminectomy Decompression- Left Side L3-S1 and then addressing right side L4-L5.
2. Disc Hern. L4-L5 - would most likely be non-responsive, could be 1-2 or 3 surgeries and end with fusion.
Problems:
1. Disc Hern. L4-L5
2. Degenerative Disc Diaese
3. Foraminal Narrowing
4. Facet Disease
5. Spinal Stenosis

So my issue is this. I have been going to a Pain management Doctor 6 months and got the following meds:
First he gave me: ( all are 1 pill twice a day)
Relafen 500
Robaxin 750
Gabapentin 100
Hydrocodone 10/325

I took those for 5 months and then asked if there was something i could take other then the Hydrocodone because it didnt seem to work that well. So he left everything the same but changed the Hydrocodone to MS Contin 30mg two a day.

So my issue is that i feel there should be something he could have given me other than the MScontin??
Does that sound right? Actually im a little freaked to take it - havent taken any yet and i feel like i may need to go to another PM doctor.... dunno
Please let me know some thoughts .

  • So the pain management doctor asked me to research having a pain pump put in when he gave me the MSContin.

So yep im just confused,,, I thought there would be other alternative medicines.
Hydrocodone to MSContin to research pain pumps. Just doesn't sound right.
Please let me know your thoughts.
