Hi, My name is Jim, I am new on here and very happy I found this site. Where do I start? I have suffered from back pain most of my life. I had my my first fusion 15 years ago C 5 6 7
I am recovering from L 3-4 fusion that I had in September 2014
I have been having cervical problems for the past 3 years. Neck, shoulder and arm pain and numbness that runs all the way to my right fingers. Here is a short version of my most current mri done in Dec 2014
C 3-4 central disc osteophyte complex which flattens the anterior thecal sac. mild bilateral facet arthropathy. mild bilateral uncovertebral joint hypertrophy. moderate right and mild left neural foraminal narrowing.
C 4-5 central disc osteophyte complex which partly effaces the anterior thecal sac. Mild right and min. left uncovertebral joint hypertrophy. Right neural foraminal narrowing.
C 5-6 Post surgical changes or anterior cervical fusion. Right central disc spurring indenting the anterior thecal sac.
C 7- T 1 Generalized disk bulge. There is disk osteophyte complex at the right neural foraminal zone encroaching upon the right neural foramen. mild right neural foraminal narrowing
Multilevel degenerative disc and joint disease of the cervical spine with superimposed anterior cervical fusion changes of C 5-6 and C 6-7. Varying degrees of foraminal narrowing.
Wow that's a lot of big words that don't mean crap to me. All I know is I am in a lot of pain all the time between this condition and my for mentioned fusion last sept. I also have Scoliosis and Degenerative disc disease of my lumbar region.
I take oxycodone 3 times a day along with a valium at night to try and sleep. I lay down and my fingers tingle like they are a sleep. I average 3-4 hours of sleep a night. I also take topiramate for preventing head aches but I still get least 3 severe head aches a week.
My surgeon has said that He would probably need to remove my fusion and extend it. but he would not know for sure until he got in there. He recommends that I hold off as long as possible to have this surgery. Until I can't handle the pain any longer or if my right arm gets much weaker. He can tell that it is already weaker than my left arm.
Questions, Has anyone had this type of surgery? Is it worth having? After 3 spine surgeries already when do you say enough is enough?
I can't even imagine what it is like to live pain free. Any advise would be great. thanks for listening.
