This thread is for people to share their experiences and/or learn about L4/5 or L5/S1 microdiscectomy surgery.
I am currently 1 week post-op from this surgery, which came as a big surprise to me. I had just recovered from a 2-level cervical ADR and herniated my L5/S1 while bending over.
My symptoms were lower back pain, which went away pretty quickly, intense foot pain, foot drop, and eventually my leg went numb. I had an MRI done in the ER and they recommended I see a neurosurgeon ASAP.
I already had a neurosurgeon from my cervical surgery, and I was able to see him a few days after my ER visit. I told him that I was not willing to try steroid shots because they had such a terrible effect on my body when I tried them for my neck, and he said that he was very concerned about how quickly my symptoms had progressed and how significantly my motor skills were affected by the herniation. So he recommended bypassing PT and going straight to surgery THE NEXT DAY. It was such a huge shock!
So now, here I am, 1 week post-op, and really struggling. All of my leg numbness is gone, but my foot pain is still there and I have the additional pain in my lower back due to the surgery. I can't find a comfortable position and have terrible pain getting in/out of bed. I can't take care of myself very well, but I am lucky to have a husband around who can help. But this has been very hard for me, especially since I just recovered from my cervical surgery.
How has the recovery process been for others?
