best pillow for sleeping?

I have bulging C5-C6 discs in neck with some arm pain. I've been in physical therapy for 2 months now. It seems my worst pain is in the morning when I wake up. Does anyone out there have any recommendations for a good pillow to ease the pain at night? I've tried several different types, but no relief. Thanks


  • My symptoms are similar. I also have issues at the C5-C6 level and am also in physical therapy (quote from my MRI report: " left posterolateral disc protusion and osteophytic lipping of the vertebral endplates"). I get intermittent, but very intense pain in the cervical spine that radiaties down my left inner shoulder blade. Recently the pain has been unbearable, to the point where I could not lift my head from the pillow. So I have tried many pillows: soft, hard, v-shaped, thick, thin, etc. The best pillow to relieve my pain was NO pillow. I generally sleep on my back and this position, without pillow, was weird at first, but works well. I try to keep my head facing the ceiling. It is very comfortable. When I turn on my side during the night I reach for a fat cushion, so that when I am lying on my side my neck is resting nicely on the cushion, not bent downwards to the left or right by gravity. This learning took a lot of trial and error but in the mornings I now feel a lot better.
