Best pain reliever Natural/Chemical?

Hello everyone,

I have been having a particularly rough week with chronic lower back pain and am feeling pretty down in the dumps. I have been trying to eliminate the amount of tramadol/endone that I am taking however this week has just been so unbearable even oxycodone is not helping.

Does anyone know of any natural substances that can help which I can use in addition to my oxycodone? I have multiple disc bulges and compression fractures in both my lumbar and cervical spine and i have inflamed facet joints. There is nothing the doctor can help me with at this point, just basically need to bare through the pain and rest. I had a rhizotomy on my lumbar facet joints, however this was 8 months ago and I believe the nerves are growing back which is potentially why the pain is increasing.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Just really want to have a good ol cry and get rid of this pain!

When you speak,of lowering your meds, are you tapering with your doctor's guidance?
Are you working with a pain management doctor?

Please share all your symptoms with your doctor, even the feeling low feelings.

In looking for "natural substances" to help with the pain, my PM doctor always wants to know any over the counter or herbal meds I might be taking.( I do not take any any longer and haven't for years)
Sometimes even the natural remedies can have problems mixing with our regular meds to cause side effects.

Please keep us posted on how you are doing!

Thank you for your reply. I see a pain specialist every few months as well as my GP and they both obviously want to minimise my med use as I am only 20 and my hormones have gone a bit out of whack since taking these medication (I have been taking oxycodone, tramadol, palexia, mersyndol, celebrex and lyrica for 2 years now). I am seeing my GP in about an hours time so I will tell him about my low feelings. I see a psych as well who tries to help a lot with not only dealing with stress from the accident which caused the injuries but as well as trying to deal with the mental side of the pain.

I just feel like my pain specialist and GP are so casual about everything...."yeh your back is always going to be a problem and i will become worse because of the severe compression fractures and disc problems, just try do some exercise, rest when it hurts, have your nerves burnt and take pain killers". I realise there might not be much they can do but i am just sick to death with being in pain....and am so sick of taking chemical pain killers. What is worse is i get judged on it all the time as well. I always get bad looks when people find out I am on Endone....they think I am some sort of drug addict which is incredibly unfair.

I feel so stupid whinging on here because I know there are a lot of people who are much worse off then me but I feel like it is nice to have a rant to people who are experiencing the same pain.

    Hi :-)
Never feel 'stupid whinging on here' as you said in your message, that is what it is for to share experiences and get support.

Everybodys pain is painful whatever the level of their coniditon. Lumbar pain is terrible as the whole weight of your upper body works from that point and it takes a lot of strain.

Ignore what others think about the medication use and also have a good cry . . it is the best tension reliever in the world. We naturally tense our bodies against and away from pain so this causes extra problems on top of injury/condition.

I have just started hydro therapy and the relief I found in that was almost worth shouting about :-). If you are not able to get that maybe your doctor could advise if using a hydro therapy pool in a spa would help you? I tried swimming but for my condition at the time that was not possible but hydro therapy is good for me.

Good luck with sorting your pain relief and keep us posted with updates on how you are and how you are feeling.

  • Thank you AJ for your support :)

I did try out hydro for a little while, I was seeing a brilliant physio for a few weeks while I was in hospital who did hydro with me pretty much every day to get myself walking again however once I left hospital I did not really see him all the often because he was so far away from my house. I think I need to get back into it. It is great to hear you found some relief!

I am trying out a new pilates studio which specialises in back injuries so hopefully that will help!
Have you ever tried bowen therapy? I am hearing a lot about it from friends at the moment saying it is really good?

glad you are seeking other treatments and good luck with Bowen therapy. I have not experienced it personally.

During my first referral from my GP to physio I was referred to a physio therapist who practiced Maitland Concept so I was very excited thinking it would very beneficial to treat, diagnose and move me forward. Unfortunately, he took one look at me and listen to my symptoms and referred by immediately for an MRI which shows a very large herniation of L5/S1 and I never saw him again :-(. I was seen by another physio on my return after my first surgery.

This is my first experience of Hydrotherapy and feeling very positive about the outcome it will take me toward. I have learn over the years that a strong core is absolutely essential for back sufferers and pilates has been recommended by my surgeon so I hope you have lots of success with that :-)

My thoughts are always on EC (engaged core) and I do it whenever I think about, whatever I do. It is the one exercise that is possible whenever and however but do double check with your current doctor to check this is ok with your condition before you do it, if you have not been instructed about that.

Would love to hear how you progress with the Bowen therapy and pilates to help guide me on my recovery :-)
