Any luck dealing with negative side effects of steroids?

I am 4 weeks post L5/S1 microdiscectomy and was terrified I had reherniated. It turns out my symptoms are due to inflammation, which is best treated with steroids. I have had trouble with oral and epidural steroid injections in the past, but I have decided to go ahead with the medrol pack because I want to do the best thing for my back.

I've had bad side effects, including anxiety, insomnia, mood swings, headaches, and shakiness. I've heard that antihistamines can help? Does anyone have any experience or recommendations?
