acdf sx c6-7 and I'm pregnant

Several weeks ago I started experiencing severe neck and arm pain that sent me to the ER. That doctor told me I had a pinched nerve in my neck. Several doctors later and an MRI revealed and herniated disc. I live in a smaller town and scheduled myself for an appointment in the city with a neurologist. He said I needed an acdf. I am 39 and 28 weeks pregnant. So treatment options have been very limited due to my pregnancy. All my doctors including my ob gyn are on board for the surgery. I am scheduled for surgery July 6th. Anyone have any advice? I am normally a very active person and I am an animal nurse or LVT. I really am having a hard time because I have missed like 2 weeks of work already and have been told I will miss another 4 weeks post surgery. Any tips for a speedy recovery and advice for my fear of surgery? I know I can not live with this pain and be able to care for a newborn. Help!

  • Honestly, I would have it as close as they think is okay to your due date, then let your recovery run right into your maternity leave. You won't be lifting anything above 5 lbs for at least 6 weeks, and then nothing above 15-20 lbs until you're fused (3-12 months).
I am a veterinarian, and I am lucky because I let the techs do the restraining - I am not allowed to - and I am 6 months out. I am still sore if I get pulled too hard - but I had a much more extensive surgery.
Another good idea is to get a second opinion if you haven't already and make sure surgery is truly necessary - it not always is.

  • Is it possible to wait until the baby is born before you have your surgery? I'm not sure I would want to have an ACDF and then go through active labor and delivery while I was still recovering from surgery. I guess you will have to weigh the options - surgery and recovery from ACDF with a newborn or pain until after the baby is born and surgery later. I waited 9 months for my surgery to make sure I was making the right choices and am now 2 weeks post ADR C6-7 and ACDF C7-T1. Good luck with your decision!
