Increased heel numbness after lifting

Hello. I've been reading messages for months but this is my first message.
I had an L5/S1 microdiscectomy on April 17, 2015. Prior to surgery, I'd had three months of pain that eventually became numbness on the left side of my entire sciatic nerve, Achilles heel and outer left foot, and three smallest toes. I also had a limp from the nerve compression.
I've been doing PT and doing well, but the numbess has remained, and I still limp, cannot go up on the toes of that foot still, though PT has been helping slightly. Well, last week I had to carry my 27 pound 3 year old out of the car, up seven steps in my house. I made sure to carry him in the best posture I could. Then the past two or three days, I still have no pain, but my heel and Achilles tendon feel much more numb than they had. Could this be a re-herniation? I'm so worried. The muscle strength appears to be the same. I've also started new exercises recently in PT before the increased numbness. I'm icing and resting.

One of the most important things that need members can do is to provide the rest of the community with as much information about themselves as possible. It is so very difficult for anyone to respond when we do not have enough information to go on. So many times we read about members who have different tests and they all come back negative. The more clues and information you provide, the better chances in finding out what is wrong, The fact that your test results are negative does not mean that you are fine and without any concerns. Many times it takes several diagnostic tests and procedures to isolate a specific condition.

Here are some questions that you should answer:

  • - When did this first start?

    . Year, Your age, etc
- Was it the result of an accident or trauma?
- Are there others in your family with similar medication conditions?
- What doctors have you seen? (Orthopedic, Neurosurgeon, Spine Specialist, etc)

  • . Which doctor did you start with? Ie Primary Care Physician
    . Who are you currently seeing?
- What Conservative treatments have you had? Which ones?

  • . Physical Therapy
    . Ultrasound / Tens unit
    . Spinal Injections
    . Acupuncture
    . Massage Therapy
- What diagnostic tests have you had? And their results (MRI, CTScan, XRay, EMG, etc)

  • . Summarize the results, please do not post all details, we cannot analyze them
    . How many different tests have you had over the years? Similar results?
- What medications are you currently using? (details, dosage, frequency, etc)

  • . Name of Medication
    . How long have you been using this?
    . Results
- Has surgery been discussed as an option? (If so, what kind)
- Is there any nerve pain/damage associated?
- What is your doctor’s action plan for treating you?

Providing answers to questions like this will give the member community here a better understanding
of your situation and make it easier to respond.

What could be good for someone could spell disaster for another.

Diagnosing spinal problems can be very difficult. In many ways it’s like a game of clue. Especially, when the diagnostic tests come back negative – no trouble found! Then it’s up to the patient and the doctor to start digging deeper. The doctor is like a detective. They need clues to help them move along. So, you as the patient need to provide the doctor with all sorts of clues. That is like it is here. Without having information about a condition, its impossible for anyone here to try to help.

  • I was told by my surgeon here in san diego that we have a 6% chance to re herniate. I am ana vid athlete so this was directed to me and my lifestyle. I would not say it is a re-herniation, but you really have to be careful with lifting at first. It has been two months since my surgery and I got the green light last week to workout...so I am lifting again but very light but more body work with core and swimming in the pool to loosen things up a bit.

    If you re-herniated you would most likely know...our disks are strong and it takes a good amount of screwed up posture and lifting wrong to redo the damage.

    Keep in mind as well, you will have bad and good days. For me, I feel I take a bunch of leaps forward then I take a few steps back...and so forth. Your tissue was ripped open to the spine...it will be inflamed and the tissue will be tender as you stretch and get it strong. You basically have to keep breaking down the tissue and rebuild muscle like any other muscle in your body.

    If you are in pain, see the doc, but you may have just inflamed the area a bit. My numbness gets better then comes back, then better. Also, my strength comes back too. The first time I lifted, I couldn't walk on my tip toes again until a few hours after lifting...so it def puts a toll on the nerves back there. I am fine now.

    Slow process....take it easy and take baby steps. Listen to your body, if it hurts, stop. Or for me if I hurt, I lay off the weights and swim to stretch out and resort to my physical therapy stuff.
