Hello guys! I'm so grateful to of found this website. I'm a 33yo female who sustained a work injuryto my in 4/15. They said it was a thoracic and low lumbar strain. X Rays were done and negative. My job is very very physically demanding and situations can change in an instant. I was helping lift someone up along with a coworker and got jolted down as they threw themselves back. I had instant pain and it got worse as we continued to assist this person to their bed and assist in pulling them up in bed. We did everything right with "proper body mechanics" but i got hurt. My other coworker did not as she showed me her 2 back braces she had on! Yeah thanks for the heads up after I get hurt. Went to re xrayed-negative given 2 shots and pain mess. I couldn't move for 2-3 days and it was rough trying to move at all. My lower back and right oblique were sore to touch. Was sent to occupational doc and PT for 9 sessions mixed with aquatics. It seemed to help until I went back to work with no restrictions. Then, I was in immense pain I had to leave early and my coworkers considered taking me to the er again. The occ doc said I "re-injured" myself? But I still had pain and limited movement when I went back and he knew it. That day I had extrem pain to my lower back ,spasms and pain radiating down my legs like electrical shocks. Got shots again and was told I just need therapy. My leg pain has gotten worse. I can barely walk and let's just say the walk to the house bathroom is so painful. Just putting my feet to the floor hurts. Sitting, walking, bending, standing, just about any activity hurts and gets worse with more activity. I'm doing my exercises and stretches at least 3xs a day with alternating hot/cold packs. I've tried the menthol patches and very little relief. I then began having numbness, tingling, with pain down my left legs and occasionally to the right leg. The occ doc first said nothing is wrong with me then asked for an Mir.But because of the claims adjuster with the company they "extended " the request until I see a "independent medical examiner who is non bias" to evaluate me then will leave it up to him to recommend the Mri. So basic in pain for a whole 30 days until I see him. They gave me tramodal for pain but it has not helped. I'm so frustrated and hurting so bad. I feel like they don't believe me and they have no basis other than an X-ray. So I'm continuing with my home exercises and have paid for a pool program at least to help my back till I see the IME. I'm pretty sur I have a herniated disk to my l4-5. My PT said I do but he couldn't be sure with out the mri. He did all these tests and said I need to be very very careful else I would need surgery. So it scared me. And I've been trying to stay active within reason. Does anyone have any suggestions as to help with sciatic relief or other non medicine pain relief? I know you all are not doctors and I'm just looking for suggestions. This has affected every aspect of my life. I feel helpless as far as getting proper treatment for this with the company's claims adjuster. She told me to try a Epsom salt bath! So yeah I cried out of frustration. Has anyone gone through this to? Any help would be wonderful. Thank you in advance.

Sciatic pain is horrible! Those electric shocks! Ugh! All the little conservative things seem so small & useless but they can add-up to a little relief in my experience. The problem with your legal situation is you're missing a large part of any pain management 'Blend' & that's the medical side.
My advise would be MRI, board certified spine surgeon for advise & the 'permission' to try concervative things...usually injections to get the inflammation down, medications & physical therapy (Better once the PT is sure whats going on) etc but I think you already know that. Ugh! The waiting must be horrible! I'd get a note book & start doing research & making a list of questions you need clearly answered by a specialist. I hate getting home realizing that I have more questions than answers. Maybe a referral to pain management?
Ice/heat, Epsom salts, aromatherapy massage oils, OTC meds & creams (Ive got all of them!) hobbling around when you can but most importantly keeping my mind occupied & not obsessing on pain (easier said than done!) is what you're left with. Please don't let anyone pull you around too much, stay away from chiropractors, until you've got that MRI & advise.
Won't they let you start on a nerve med (Gabapentin, Lyrica, Savella etc)? Muscle relaxant (Tizanidine, Baclofen, Cyclobenzaprin etc)? Stronger pain meds? I don't really understand workers comp issues. They seem to take so very long!

    I'm so sorry.

  • Thank you for your suggestions! They had me on robaxin, naproxen, then prednisone but it still didn't help. After the prednisone the pain came back worse. And because of stomach reasons I can no longer take NSAIDs. So I'm doing Tylenol and tramodal. The occ doc took me off everything but tramodal. The claims adjuster is basically denying everything until I see this ime. I had on of their docs tell me " his job is to functionally get me back to work not advocate foe me. And I'll be like this probably for the rest of my life" ,... I cried and filed a complaint. No luck with that. So I'm very skeptical about their doctors. My pcp was so upset they are making me wait and sees I'm suffering with all this. Walking is unbearable. If I have a good day, I'm suffering at night and the next couple of days with no stop shouting pain down my legs. Not only that my spouse doesn't understand why I can't walk. He feels bad seeing me cry. I just need to get better. I will start a list of questions to ask. My boss has been amazing and completely understanding. I miss my job! I love what I do. Now I've been considering moving into a different role that's not so demanding and unpredictable. I really don't want to but it's probably best for me. If things couldn't get any worse, my husband has just been diagnosed with cancer. So it's been really rough. I'm trying to stay positive. So my focus is getting better returning to my life and taking care of my husband. But the pain definitely holds me back and lays me out. Thank you again for the advice!

Your story is very similar to mine except I injured my neck at work. I was a CNA & injured my neck & shoulder while working with a resistive patient. I had to go through all of the work comp doctors & a couple IME doctors, too.
I'm not sure where you live, but in PA, after 90 days, I was permitted to see any doctor I chose. Do you have that ability? I agree that you need to get an MRI & get a diagnosis. It sounds like you have something going on.
I also had to hire an attorney to help me get the work comp benefits that I was entitled to. I would research some attorneys. I was able to find mine through my therapist's recommendation. He has helped me tremendously through this process.
Don't be too worried about seeing the IME doctor. The one I saw agreed with everything my doctor said.
Unfortunately, you have to follow the work comp protocol & do things in their order.
Good luck to you & keep us updated.

I'm so sorry to hear about your husband. Life is so bloody hard sometimes! I truly feel for you.
I was thinking & have you read any of the threads under 'Insurance Issues'? You can find it by hitting on 'Mind/Body/Spirit' at the top left. I wish I knew more about the workers comp system in the USA. I know there have been many discussions. I hope something can help.

    Hugs! Stay strong!

  • I live in Texas and my company doesn't have workers comp. They use a 3 rd party insurance company for injuries. I think this is why I'm having such trouble. My bosses has both advocated for me calling them to help me speed this up but no luck either. I'm kind of in the dark about it all. The claim adjuster doesn't return my calls nor follows thru with things. I told her I wanted to file a grievance but who knows what happened with that. They just said if I seek treatment on my own everything would get denied. So it scared me. My deductible is so high as well. I tried looking for an attorney but once I told them of a 3rd party insurance they said they couldn't help me. So maybe it's best I wait to see this IME. I'm just trying to do my best with what I have. It just hurts to really do anything right now. I will look under the insurance tab and see what I can find. I'm so grateful for all the advice thank you guys!
