L5S1 Microdiscectomy Post Op Questions

Hi All!
I am 3 weeks post op from a microdiscectomy - so far, I am very glad I got it. The surgeon said there was very little disc material left, so all of the precautions we talked about, were even more important. We are depending on scar material to fill up the hole left behind from cleaning everything up. I see him this coming Friday for the first time since my surgery - what should I expect from that visit? I haven't heard anything about getting another MRI to see how successful this was, do they do that? He will be ordering PT at that point which is great.

Most of my pain is gone, but I still have moments where if I move a certain way (but, no set way), I get pain. Also, my leg is very weak, still. In fact, I feel like this last week it has gotten more weak - is this all normal part of healing?

This site and forum has been a great resource for me, and I can't wait for the feedback - thank you!

PS: What is the criteria for going back to work? He initially said 6 weeks, and I'm worried he is going to shorten that. I have a desk job, and I'm certain that has contributed to the severity of my condition. I was hoping to get the full 6 weeks, or more. Thoughts on this?

  • Hi, I had a microdiscectomy in May and returned to work (mainly desk based) after 7 weeks. I tried doing 5 days from 9-1 but got to Thursday and was completely exhausted, had backache and had to lie down for a few days to recover. This week I've cut back and only done Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9-1 and so far it hasn't been too bad. I'll do the same again next week and then try increasing my hours. I have to get up and take frequent short walks though!

If you're able to, try starting for a few hours and see how it goes, get up and take short walks occasionally, if you start hurting or feel it's too much then it is too much and cut back!
