morphine and constipation

Hello all; I was trying to post this to the specific thread about morphine and constipation and couldn't figure out how to do it. I need to post this info so here goes. I've been on morphine for several years and suffered badly with severe constipation. I recently brought tis up again with my doctor and she told me I can take more than one dose of Miralax a day if I need it to keep going. She said two doses of Milk of magnesia is ok too. Whatever I need. Personally, I find this hard to believe because it seems like it will do a number on my intestines, but things have been so bad since I upped my dose of pain pills that I need to do something. I usually take one dose a day and that's not really working anymore. I trade off and use milk of magnesia too. This has been so bad I have no choice but to up the dose of laxative. Also, I'd like to mention that I've read here that the Walmart, generic brand miralax is the same stuff. It gives me stomach cramps personally, bad ones, too. The brand name and the generic are not interchangeable for me. I thought I should get the word out about this. Also, she said I can take both miralax and milk of magnesia long term with no problems. I hope this helps someone. Maybe ask your doctor too to verify this. I'm interested in hearing any responses and thanks for reading. djjwilly

  • A prescription medication specifically for opioid induced constipation, I think it's called linzess.

  • I've had problems with morphine. For me the extended release is the worst of all the narcotics for constipation. I already live (mostly) on an arthritis Antiinflammatory diet, lots of fresh stuff, no processed food. I eat a lot of fruit & veg & drink fruit juice. Prunes are good for breakfast with a glass of orange juice. I get my fiber & protein a little at a time throughout the day. I eat lots of little snacks & try to avoid big meals. Im also aware that my magnesium suppliment says it can have a laxative effect..I think one of my meds does to (could be my old sleeping pill I need to check!). Anyway, I managed to be regular only taking laxatives twice last year!! That's on morphine ER & Oxycodone. (& Opana for a while)
I try hard to manage my diet for pain (I have arthritis) & weight control & to avoid constipation. The pharmacist put the fear of god into me in the past when I went 5 days without going!! Ugh!! I'm still 'naughty' occasionally. I have a sweet tooth so that's my biggest vice. I'll eat ribs, steak etc with my family but make sure I get extra juice if I do. I know it's not always possible to manage these things with diet. I've failed miserably in the past.
I try to avoid laxatives when I can. I've found it becomes a need. Know what I mean? When I take laxatives everyday, I need to take them all the time. If I go 24 hours without going I take them. It was Thanksgiving & Christmas & living on rich leftovers that messed up my routine last year.

Narcotics always list constipation as a major side-effect. I had no idea how many people end-up in the ER over this. People die!! However we manage it, it MUST be managed.
    Osteoarthritis & DDD.
  • I was on painkillers for years and just used cherry Milk of Magnesia ervery night before I went to bed. One almost full bathroom cup. Never needed to up the "dosage" of it and never had tolerance to it. I drank a cup before bed, woke up and went to the bathroom (and then usually again a little later). Never failed. Never had cramps. Never went back to regular laxatives. Kept me regular. Good luck.
