I really don't want to go to the doctor.. So can anyone help me figure out what's wrong with my back.... I've never had back pain of any kind or any injurys....Untill a week ago i had this huge knot in my back just by my shoulder blade. Had it massaged out like deep tissue. The next day, i had a sharp pain on the middle of my shoulder blade. It hurts all the way down from my neck, to just the right side of my back to my ribs but just the muscles. It hurt to breath, my chest started hurting like bones, sharp, but only shortly. Nausea, headache. It hurts more resting. Stretching hurts but it feels better or if i'm curled up. The sharp pain goes away if i use the muscles but then they hurt. My feet are swelling.. I rested for 4 days completely pretty much. Went away completely. Today out of no where it's back the exact same. I've tried pain meds, hot/cold, massage, rest, creams....

Nobody on the forum is medically qualified or permitted to give advice or suggest a diagnosis only a medical professional can do this

I am new to the site and maybe I can find other people in my situation to compare treatments and how to stay positive. I have had a scoliosis of my spine since childhood. I have always dealt with it and exercise was a huge help. In fact I taught exercises for many years with an emphasis on strengthening the muscles in the back, stomach, core to help the back. Now that I am over 60 and have now been diagnosed with Sarcoidosis, Chrones, Addison's (which I do believe I have had since childhood as well), COPD.....and on and on....the exercising has gotten very difficult to do. I am now experiencing a lot of pain in my lower back and have been told I have bulging discs. The pain goes through my hip and extreme pain in my thigh. I have had shots done by my a pain management doctor. He has recently done a treatment which numbs the nerve endings. But that only helped for about a week and the pain is back. Additionally I had a lot of pain in my shoulder which they did do an injection and that has helped a lot (for now). I was told eventually I may need surgery to replace the "ball" in the shoulder. The moist annoying is the pain in my left hand....mostly by the thumb. I was given a shot which helped for about a month. I was told I can't get another shot until the end of August. I have four different hand braces which I change out every few hours to get as much relief as I can. I have never heard anyone tell me that had success with hand surgery....so I am really trying to avoid that. I transcribe for a little extra money and do a lot of crocheting....so I don't want to lose use of my hand. I think a lot of my issues are from thirty years of taking prednisone for all my conditions. I tried to get off of it (slowly) but when I got down to one mg. I was hurting all over and it became obvious that I need to keep the prednisone at at least five mg. I have been getting bone density tests yearly, which show things are getting worse. I get an infusion every year to help, which I can't imagine how much worse I would be without, but does not stop things from deteriorating. There are days I just feel like I'm "falling apart." I have not gone to a rheumatologist yet, partially because I don't want to be diagnosed with anything else. I do see a pain management doctor who did the shots in my back and the procedure with the nerves. He prescribes 10 mg of Percocets up to four times a day. I usually wait longer than I should to take a pill as I am always concerned about becoming addicted. The Percocets take the edge off of my back, doesn't help with my and or my thigh/leg (and I also get pain in my left foot which also has had shots in the past). I also have sleep Apnea which I use a C-pap nightly and take Nuvigil daily to keep me from constantly sleeping, which I'm guessing is due to all the auto-immune conditions I have. If there is anyone reading who has multiple issues as I do and dealing with joints and bones breaking down, would love to hear from you.

  • Just surfing the web I found out that Chrone's (which I do have among other things) can cause issues with the back....and other areas of the body...gives very similar indications like arthritus.....but it is different. It actually is saying treating it is by treating the IBS areas of Chrone's....which sound crazy.....but I am going to check with my doctors to see what they think. Chrone's can also cause tiredness....which I am also dealing with.....so I have something to at least investigate. If anyone has Chrone's and having back problems.....mention it to your doctor who is caring for the Chrones....I would be interested to hear if anyone gets any responses about it!

I'm not sure why you don't want to go to the doctor...?
And if not going to doctor, who prescribed your pain meds? Or are the over the counter?

  • Thanks for replying, I think you may have been replying to the person above my post. Believe me....I go to a ton of doctors!!!! Pulmonary, Cardiologist, Blood doctor, GI, Endo, pain management....and the list goes on and on. Sadly with auto immune diseases (which I have at least four and counting)....seems like there is a doctor's appointment every day...... In the past I did not to search on line for info..... it gets so confusing. What I'm finding now is.... doctors don't like to talk to each other .... so you get different directions from each. (Makes me crazy). Going to two doctors today.... I did print out some info that I found on line that no doctors have mentioned what I found to me.....so I am now giving doctors what I found so they can at least discuss with me and hopefully get some of them thinking the same way. I'm still waiting for that "golden years" thing to happen! Seems the older I get the more they find! My fix is.....stay positive..... try to keep as busy as possible..... and hopefully that will help me somewhat "heal myself" (as much as possible). The worst is the pain.....and at least two of my auto immune conditions cause tiredness. I have a sleep disorder which makes me need to have a C-pap machine (I actually stop breathing during the nigh)....but also have something very similar to Narcolepsy....so I get up in the morning....and want to go right back to sleep. So I try to exercise....or anything I can to keep awake....which of course is hard with all the pain. One of the doctors I'm seeing today is the pain management doctor who just recently did a procedure which blocks the nerves in your back.. That did work for about one week...but the info I found on line is that Chrone's disease can actually cause back pain and similar feelings of pain like arthritus....with I am feeling in my hand, shoulder, feet, hip.....most of which I can deal with...but the hand is tough as I type for people. (even with the pain....and sometimes a brace on it) I type over 175 WPM. Needless to say the pain makes it tough.....I'm hoping the information I am going to give the doc today will help him come up with something to get this all under some control.

Hope all is under control with you! Have a great day!
