HELP! Extreme pain in my neck!

Hi everyone. I think I have a slipped disk and pinched nerve in my neck. The other day I felt a pop and my left arm got numb. I went to the doctor and got an X-ray done, they sent me to PT (the next appointment isn't available til 2 weeks from now) and said will send me to get an MRI and specialist if a few weeks of PT doesn't improve my symptoms. the doctor says it looks like there's not much space in between my C4 and 5. And the left side of it seems like there's no space at all. The pain in getting is mostly on my left side. During the day i feel mostly normal except for tightness in the neck and shoulders. But the main problem is at night. Whenever I put pressure on my neck from lying down, it flares up and gets swollen, inflamed, muscle spasms, numbness. I can't move myself even slightly without intense pain. I've tried going to sleep in diff positions/support. I have a temper pedic pillow and also a small "log" that a friends gave me from her previous visits to PT office (supports the arch of the neck. It's soft and about 4-5" diameter).. So far, seems like no matter how I sleep, it will result in tremendous amount of pain after a period of time. I have almost no pain when I fall asleep initially, but always wake up with intense pain after about an hour or so. I havnet been about to rest much.... Help!!!

  • I would find another doctor to see ASAP if possible. Maybe an Ortho or neurosurgeon. In case you have herniated a disc and there may be nerves compression, you don't want to wait too long. In the meantime try icing your neck to calm the pain. If the disc is herniated that badly PT will not help at all. Mine was badly herniated and I did PT for a year to "avoid" surgery and it did absolutely nothing for me. I think that's always the first course of action.
