Dear board members,
I have been going through some rough times and I hope that I can get some insight from those of you who are familiar with cervical myelopathy.
Here is my situation: I am having symptoms identical to cervical myelopathy since two months ago and I have been having terrible neck pain for two years, and yet my MRI only shows "slight circumferential disc bulge and minimal uncovertebral hypertrophy at c4-c5 and c6-c7". I have seen two orthopedic surgeons and a neurosurgeon and a sports medicine specialist they all immediately decided that the problem can not be from my neck and that I should explore other possibilities (i.e., MS).
However, i have a strong feeling this is from my neck. Just some info about me: male, 35, with a bunch of skeletal issues: hip impingement (which I had a surgery for) and big toe bone spurs, which I was recommended to have surgery for.
Some more details:
My neck pain basically started two years ago (I have a desk job) and i had some physiotherapy for it. Three months ago I had an MRI just for the neck pain (this is before neurological symptoms began, my doctor didnt think I need a new one for the neuro symptoms). About 3 weeks after the MRI I was doing some yoga at home and when I woke up the next day my right hand was having some serious pins and needles. I never had any neurological problems but right away I knew what it was. In the span of the next 3 weeks I developed the following symptoms:
1) weakness in hands, difficulty holding up my arm, typing, making a fist seemed very hard. I always read in bed, I just cant hold up a book more than 30 seconds anymore. Shoulders feel weak too.
2) Urinary urgency, I just couldn't keep it in! once i was driving and had to pull over and use the bathroom in a coffee shop!
3) erectile problems. I cant reach a full erection and my sex drive has gone to nill.
4) weakness in legs and unsteadiness and wobbliness (feels like im walking on a ship on rough seas).
5) more neck pain and stiffness
It is interesting that before the lower body symptoms started I was at my physio who was working on my neck and as soon as he turned my neck in a specific direction both of my feet went cold! I freaked out and told him to do it again, and once more, my feet went completely cold. This is one of the reasons I think the problem is in the neck.
Also another strange thing: my symptoms have changed in the last two months a lot. I do not have that much urinary urgency anymore and I dont feel as unsteady anymore but my hand weakness is progressive. Also the pins and needles have gone down a lot and now I dont have much pain except for the neck.
Sorry for the long post! if anyone could shed some light on this situation I would be grateful. I am at the end of my wits and doctors are starting to think I am making it up! One of my good friends is a family physician and he keeps telling me I need to take a vacation maybe! When your best friend doesnt believe you then what can I expect from other doctors?
Thank you for reading my story
