Post PLIF surgery - massive back muscle spasms

Per an earlier forum post, I'm currently recovering from PLIF - lumbar fusion surgery (L4/L5). However, I'm having a horrible time with back muscle spasms that are so severe that I'm actually worried that they'll create new problems and maybe even screw up the healing of my wound and maybe even cause me to fall and hurt myself even further. I'm wondering if anyone else has had to deal with this issue, and if so, if there was any successful treatment.

When I say massive lower back muscle spasms, I mean MASSIVE. They usually occur when I'm lying down on the bed - the softer the bed, the worse the spasms. I'm now sleeping in a chair on upright in bed. I'm so tired. Anyone else had to deal with post-op spasms like this? How have you treated them?

  • Hey Chapps,

Yes, I had incredible muscle spasms right in the centre of the spine below the incision for 7-8 weeks. I ended up staying 10 nights in hospital because the spasms were so severe. They gave me Diazepam which helped massively and still do. Hope this helps.

Thanks, this gives me something to discuss with my doctor. The fact that you and others have experienced this swelling post-op - and some of you have found solutions - makes me feel like there's some hope. My swelling isn't only in my ankles and feet - it's my entire body. I've gained well over 20 lbs since my surgery, which was a week and a half ago. I'm seeing my doc this Wed (after a CT scan) and I'll mention Diazepam.
