Hello, my name is Amber and I am currently 22 years of age. Back in November of 2006, I was in a pretty bad car accident. I was driving my fiances 97 Cadillac on a highway at 40mph when a girl in a Hyundai Tiburon ran a stop sign, and I plowed right into her. Both cars were totaled, and I was taken to the hospital with a headache and bruises and cuts due to the airbags. Because of Florida No Fault, I am responsible for my own medical bills. Now, my insurance has paid it's due, but I have reached my PIP. I have no health insurance, no money, just graduated from college, and don't know what to do. I have been through 5 jobs because of my back, not able to keep them or they fire me right after I give them my limitation notes. No doctor will see me without insurance or unless I have the money straight up front. I am currently on an LOP with my local Chiropractor, but he can only do so much for me. When I was in the accident, I had several MRIs and X-rays. I have a severe disk herniated in my T7 Vertebrae, protruding into my spinal cavity/canal and putting pressure on my sciatica. I also now have scoliocis, 2 bulging disks on T6 and T5. I have 2 messed up ribs, and reverse curvature of the neck. I have had shots in my back, but those didn't help. I have tried to see a pain management doctor, but I had to pay up front and I just didn't have it. My chiro says that I will need surgery or I won't be able to have kids. These past two weeks however my back seems to have gone down hill. I have having numbness and tingling in my legs, sharp severe pains in the buttox and legs, sharp lower and mid back pain, muslce spasms in the neck, back, and legs. I have been in the most excruciating pain these last 3 days then ever before. I can no longer bathe myself, put my sneakers on, pretty much do anything without being in moderate to severe pain. I cannot even stand up straight because it feels like my bones are smashing my nerves up in a mortar. I am so depressed, have no money, and just do not know what to do. Everyone tells me to try to look into programs or experimental surgeries so I can get it done for free, but this is my back we are talking about. My life. I don't just want anyone to touch it. I can't even see another doctor to get other opinions. Anyone have any ideas? I am on hydrocodone and naproxen, and I barely take it because it knocks me out and I get stomach problems afterwards. Someone help me. I am so young....oh, and the girl that pulled out, she has no money but is driving around a new Nissan Extera....what gives? My fiance STILL has no car....thanks Florida No Fault!

Sorry about your pain and current situation
Unfortunately without insurance, there are not many specialist that will see you and treat you. And dealing with the Thoracic discs is something that only qualified doctors should work on. Surgery for Thoracic discs is very intense and complicated. It has gotten better over the recent years, but it is still much more involved then Lumbar or Cervical surgery.
Do you have any State agencies that can provide some relief.
My son is a caterer, self employed so he has no health insurance. He was able to submit a request to the State of CT for financial aid for medical expenses. Each state has different requirements, but you should be able to find some Florida state dept that would handle your situation.

  • Thanks, I will have to look into that. It was even hard to apply for financial aid for college because my parents and I fall into the make too much to quilify but not enough to qualify..ugh I just don't think it's fair that someone as young as I should be bed ridden. And this girl, driving around a brand new car and no injuries....
  • Hi i just dont get what the know fault insurance deal is, have you lookedinto legal representation? 2 year statute of limitations n all. sounds to me she had insurance and didnt tell you,but thats just my opinion, sorry for the troubles your having. here in Texas i use the county medical services, but i almost didnt qualify coz i had made to much money the last job i had, i tryed to walk out of the office from frustration, that may be an option you can look into, also ssi might be looked into as well.
As to the doctor, is it an insurance designted doctor? you have rights as a patient, thing are different in the states but not being able to see another doc?? who told you this?

Miss Amber you hang in there and fight! assume the spiney fight position..its a fierce one..chind down, hands up..start swinging!!!
You will overcome this! you will have the stregth and courage to overcome! dont give up hope yet Amber ...were just getting started in this fight!

  • Florida No fault basically states that you are responsible for your own medical bills. Even though she was charged in the accident, points on her license, I still am responsible for my well being. Now, I do have legal representation, and he had insurance. She only had $10,000 liability though, which is the min required by the state of Florida. Florida and New York I believe are the only 2 states that are like this. I can only get $10,000 dollars from her, and other then that she has no money. She's 18 and still lives with her mother. I can put a lean on her house and out her into bankrupsy, but I would still get no money. I don't want money to live off of, I want my dang back surgery so I can have kids and enjoy a normal life. I went to the doctor's yesterday and I have been placed on bed rest. Apparently, the Dr. feels that I could be developing Caudic Equina Syndrome. Thanks!
  • Hey Amber, your an honorable person, yes you could seek to bankrupt the irresponsible party ,but you didnt, you could be screaming mad, but you ar'nt, instead you take the hard road,,you btook the high road..that is a true example of character anbd virtue! I would give ya a hug, but your other half might take exception to that, any way keep your chin up and your heart full of courage, things will work out. As for the coauda equina, i hope its not that, there are symptomes that can be distressing..we have discussed this among members here, some suffeing, some in the begining stages, like me,and some post symptomatic.
I will pray for you and i hope you get justice soon
