Hardware removal?

I keep reading that people have had their hardware removed. Is that standard? I thought it would just stay with me forever. I have a level 3 TLIF on Aug 5th-L4-S1. I do not really know that much about it-except for what I have read here-I was just wondering if everyone has to have their hardware removed. Thanks!
