Can not swallow, 4 hours of surgery. But most a annoying symptom is that when I exhale while trying to sleep, my upper back palate closes up so I can't exhale. And thus cant sleep.

you should talk to your doctor........breathing trouble is nothing to mess around with and you really need your rest..... can you swallow liquids at all?
  • I had this very same thing my first 2 nights post op. I stopped the Soma thinking it may be an allergy as I have MANY medicine allergies. I also only sleep sitting up or slightly reclining. Everything is swollen inside and the effects of that are driving me crazy. I am 4 days post op now....and I am miserable which is probably to be expected now. What did your doc say was the cause? I had a 3 level C4-7 acdf.
  • It might be helpful for you to either lay flat or in a recliner. Either way, I would keep your head, neck, and back aligned very straight. If you saw the plating on there, you might understand. I only had one level but at times I get in a strange position and I can feel something weird with my throat.
C4-C5 ACDF surgery with plating August 28.
