constant pain even with pain meds

ruthlesskrrruthlesskr Posts: 6
I have had ongoing back pain for last 2 years and in January 2015 was diagnosed with bulging disc at l5s1 with slight contact of the sciatic nerve. In March of this year my leg was constantly numb and I was tripping a lot. I began physiotherapy and was prescribed 150mg of Lyrica twice a day. I also have been going to chiropractor and massage therapy. At the end of July I had a transforaminal epidural that landed me in the hospital emergency room 3 days later due to the pain and intense headache. There I was prescribed 500mg of Naproxen twice a day on top of the 150 MG of Lyrica . Then pain after the epidural was worse than before the shot. It is slowly getting better but at the end of Sept and I am still taking 500mg of Naproxen and 150mg of Lyrica and I am still in huge amount of pain constantly. I find i have very little patience with anyone and mostntimes just prefer to be left alone. This is changing who i am as a person. Most times i am able to hide my tears but it is getting hard tobhide the sadness and frustration. The pain does not affect my movement so people don't realize or believe how much pain I am in. A new mri and an emg test is scheduled to see what is going on. My left hip is also now starting to hurt. Any thoughts or advice from anyone would be appreciated.

I totally relate to the loss of patience with people, especially if you are still working.
    I was so irritable.
It's difficult to try to keep pain under control while listening to what others are saying and or instructing you on what to do.

My EMG was most revealing for my doctor ..and for me.

Does your spine specialist still think it's good idea to continue with chiropractor?
Sometimes it can aggravate situation, so I would double check.

Please keep us posted on how you're doing!

  • I was laying in bed last night in severe acute spasm pain. I think it was a pinched nerve, (I'm not a doctor, I don't know) but it was sharp, breathtaking, cry worthy on right side of spine. I kept trying to find a position of comfort between spasms. I felt like the kid on poltergeist who counts between the thunder and lightning. I was excited at 41 seconds, then 1.3, and eventually I fell asleep. And I'm no newbie. I'm scheduled for third fusion in a month and have been through this for 12 years...the pain always surprises me.

That said, I had a series of epidural injections all thru August. So last night episode told me they have all worn off. I have a last one scheduled for a week from now, to help me get thru pain until fusion. Sometimes the shots help, sometimes they don't, but I am in line with my neuro and pain management dr because they care deeply about me.

Have you had the opportunity to talk to doctor about another injection? I totally relate to you about the headache. On my third shot a few weeks ago he did transformenal and caudal in same procedure. A day later I developed a headache like nothing I've ever experienced. Almost went to ER, but able to settle with ibuprofen, coffee, and ice in strict order (inuprofen every 4/6 hours, caffeine almost like a drip, and ice on and off 15 minutes). Wow..I hear u, unbelievable pain. When I went to my pt for just a massage 3 days post shot, he did not touch my back, instead, he did tens, heat and massage on neck..instant relief. He said it wasn't s spinal headache, but muscle spasms. Knowing that, I'm comfortable going for shot again because I know how to handle possible headache and that doctor will treat if I can't.

I sympathize with you on this pain, gosh, and that you have had since January, and the numbness! I too have endured and it is so painful when feeling returns. Disconcerting when my right foot just stays numb. I use a cane to make sure I don't fall. My current situated began in April. I know fusion won't solve chronic back pain I have lived with comfortablely for 12 years (that is the chronic pain that is not always comfortable), but it will probably address the acute pain and nerve pain in legs and feet. Fusion has been lifesaving for me 2004 and 2014. And mine is congenital, not adjacent..though of course gravity hasn't helped. We always knew I'd have these three done, but spaced them as far as possible. This should be my last one.

I wish you comfort as you travel this path and encourage you to meet back with your doctor(s) as soon as possible to set a plan to alieve your pain and manage it.

Lastly, (sorry for long post) consider seeing a therapist just for you. I'm in no way suggesting you need this! I just know that choosing to do this for me has allowed me a forum to vent and let it out to a person who can hear it and not try to judge it..fix it..ironically she does fix it just by being there and hearing me. I'm able to tell her my frustrations at dealing with pain like I described at beginning of post, that often occurs while interacting with others. When I move my back feels better too, but the minute I stop, pain or numbness. It makes it hard to stay in the moment with people. Of course I'd rather endure pain alone, but I'm fortunate to have these people who want me in their life. By going to the therapist once a month, we are working to integrate meditative relaxation for when I stop moving, so I can be in the moment with people.

Please keep posting your progress. I hope you have a doctor appointment soon to map out a plan to help you, alive pain or manage it. I think writing in these forums is a great therapy as well. I have been lifted by so many here and hope you too have that outcome. Reading you this morning..I just had to reply. You are not alone. Wishing you comfort.

  • I actually have discontinued the chiropractor as in don't really think it's helping any. A therapist is a great idea..I find a lit of people ask how u are but they really don't want to hear the truth. Someone to listen would be great. As for another cortisone shot. ..far too scared to try that again. And my wait to see spine specialist is December 2016. Just going thru family doctor right now.
