nerve pain from a herniated disc

I am 3 Months post op cervical posterior Disectomy. There was extensive damage to my c8 nerve. I am still in lots of pain under my shoulder blade down my arm and into my hand and fingers. My pinky and ring finger are curled in and do not work well. I have terrible pain and take 2 to 3 painkillers a day. I went from being a active person to now doing nothing. I am really feeling hopeless and depressed.does anyone know how long it takes for a nerve to heal. My work injury was 4/1/15 so I have been this way for 6 months now with no pain relief. Please help

Have you had any nerve testing done?
I've had 2 neck surgeries & just recently, rotator cuff surgery. All from a work injury in 2013.
After my rotator cuff surgery, I had horrible pain in my elbow & down my arm & my last 2 fingers go numb. I went back to my orthopedic doctor & he read my EMG and said I have ulnar nerve compression. I have to wear a brace on my arm while I sleep. He said if it doesn't get any better, I'll be facing another surgery. He also told me that if I leave it untreated, the damage could be permanent?
I'm not saying that is what's wrong with you, but if you research ulnar nerve, you will find a lot of information on it.
I would call your doctor & let him know these symptoms you are having.
Good luck & let us know what you find out.
  • I did have a EMG and the test came back show that I had a lot of damage to my c8 nerve. The doctor does know about all the pain and he say
I have to wait and see if the nerve heals. I have to
see him in three months. He did think it was the ulnar nerve but he ruled it out after the EMG test

Are you taking any kind of nerve pain meds? Amitryptline or gabapentin?
Regular pain meds don't really work for nerve pain.
  • So I don't know about the C8 nerve, but I can speak from my experience with the sciatic nerve in my leg (just be aware) - the pain can be really bad sometimes but currently I am on gabapentin for the pain and it helps take the edge off. My highest dose is at night which helps me get to sleep - that's the worst part for me anyhow. Talk to your doctor about taking something for the nerve pain like gabapentin, amitryptiline or Lyrica but let them guide you and see what they can do to help. Nerve blocks are also things that I have heard of that really help.

I understand the pain, it's unbearable sometimes - I can't be as active as I would like and it really gets me down too. You aren't alone. There are a lot of people who understand especially on here. Just reach out when you need a hug and we can help you through.
