2 days post op coughing

Two days ago I had a 3 level acdf with instrumention C4-7, cord decompression, removal of bone spurs one of which had perforated the cord lining. Went home the same day. My biggest complaint is fluid in my lungs from the surgery!! I can eat and drink fine with minimal discomfort. But was up most of last night trying to clear my lungs out. I have had this with other surgeries in past years but not this bad! Seems much better this morning. All the coughing scared me because of the type of surgery andy doc does not use a collar except in the car. Anyone else have this problem? What helps other than hot tea with honey?

  • My fiance just had ACDF. He had a lot of problems with coughing. The dr. said it was mostly due to the breathing tube during the surgery and it would go away with time. For him it was almost 2 weeks. Lots of tea, cough drops and honey sticks for him!

I am glad to know I have not been the only one! I have irrational fears that all that coughing and such will affect my plates and screws. How is your boyfriend now and how long into his recovery is he?
  • He is now 2 months post op and doing pretty well. It seems car riding is not the most comfortable! Incidentally, I also recently had surgery (discectomy lumbar) and I had the same coughing from the breathing tube. Good luck to you! It gets better!
