Prednisone AND possible injection

Hi everyone. About 4 years ago I had my L4 L5 and SI fused.....WITH WONDERFUL RESULTS. Dr. [edit] at [edit] IS THE BEST! I had 12 years of hell and dealing with pain doctors and hacks that wanted to say I had fibro...I thought I was going to die. [edit] diagnosed me within minutes and after surgery I had a slow dance with my husband and cried. Anyway, This past summer my back started hurting again (and I am very careful with everything I do) . The biggest thing is probably picking up my small grandchildren but I do it carefully. So I had pain in my back above the fusion. Stabbing pain, my crotch went numb and electrical shots of pain down my legs when I walked. My physician put me on a low dose of narco and it helped a bit. (I am one that pills are not very effective on me) So about 2 -3 weeks ago it got worse and one week ago I couldn't walk period and was in excruciating pain. I was able to contact my back Doc/[edit] and he ordered an MRI. I blew out the left side of L3 L4. So here is my question. He put me on prednisone. After two days I can stand up again and walk without a huge limp but my back down into my butt/hips still hurts. Is prednisone just a temp fix? he said if this doesn't help he will schedule me for an injection and if that doesn't work we need to fuse L3 L4. Before I found [edit] I was at a pain clinic and they did all types of meds and then would do injections (facet, epidurals, nerve blocks, cortisone..you name it I had it) and they would only work for a little while. So again, is prednisone just hiding the issue or can it fix it? and same with the possible injection. I ask because when I was at the pain clinic a neurosurgeon told me on the side not to have any more injections. Granted this is 4 + years later. I am just wondering if I am prolonging the inevitable. My son is coming home from the Army for Christmas and I want to be able to function when he is here. Thanks in advance for any info.
